Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to help you feel confident about taking the next step

About My Approach

Will you judge me for my lifestyle choices?

Absolutely not. You deserve a therapist who accepts you completely. I work with clients from all walks of life and believe your experiences and choices are valid. Our therapeutic relationship will be built on respect, acceptance, and genuine support.

How do I know if you really "get" my situation?

I've made it my specialty to understand and support people who walk non-traditional paths. I have extensive training in working with LGBTQ+ clients, those practicing ethical non-monogamy, and survivors of spiritual abuse. More importantly, I've lived some of these experiences myself—I'm a lesbian in a 32-year marriage who has navigated my own healing from religious trauma. When I say I understand, it comes from both professional expertise and personal experience.

How is your approach different from traditional therapy?

Traditional therapy often focuses on "fixing" what's wrong or making you fit better into conventional expectations. My approach is different:

  • I see your coping strategies as brilliance, not pathology

  • I celebrate your authentic choices rather than questioning them

  • I work as your partner in discovering what healing looks like for you specifically

  • I help you redirect existing strengths toward your current goals instead of eliminating them

  • I create space for spiritual exploration without religious assumptions

  • I understand alternative relationship structures and don't pathologize them

Practical Questions

Why do some clients choose private pay even with insurance?

Many of my clients choose private pay because:

  • Complete privacy: No insurance company involvement means no diagnosis required in your permanent medical record

  • No session limits: Insurance often restricts the number of sessions; private pay gives you control over your treatment length

  • Specialized care: Insurance may not cover the specific approaches I use or may not understand the need for LGBTQ+ or spiritually-affirming therapy

  • Authentic presenting concerns: You can be completely honest about your reasons for seeking therapy without worrying about insurance approval

What does it mean that you're a mandated reporter?

As a licensed therapist in Louisiana, I'm legally required to report:

  • Suspected abuse of children, elderly persons, or disabled individuals

  • Serious threats of harm to yourself or others

  • When ordered by a court

Important: Your lifestyle choices, relationship structure, spiritual beliefs, or sexual practices are NOT reportable concerns. Being polyamorous, practicing kink, following alternative spirituality, or being LGBTQ+ are not reasons for reporting.

Am I safe discussing my lifestyle openly?

Yes. Everything we discuss is protected by strict confidentiality laws (HIPAA). Your alternative lifestyle, spiritual practices, relationship choices, and sexual identity are completely safe to explore in our sessions. I maintain the same confidentiality standards regardless of how conventional or unconventional your life may be.

How does telehealth work?

All sessions are conducted through SimplePractice's HIPAA-compliant video platform. You'll receive a secure link to join our session from any device with internet access. I serve clients throughout Louisiana, so you can participate from anywhere in the state where you have privacy and a stable internet connection.

Getting Started

How do I know if we're a good fit?

The best way to know is through a brief initial consultation where we can discuss your needs and see if my approach resonates with you. You should feel heard, understood, and unjudged from our very first interaction. Trust your instincts—you'll know if this feels like the right space for your healing journey.

What happens in the first session?

We'll spend time getting to know each other and understanding what brought you to therapy. I'll ask about your goals, your history, and what you're hoping to accomplish. Most importantly, I'll make sure you feel comfortable and safe being completely authentic about who you are and what you need.

How do I schedule an appointment?

You can contact me through the SimplePractice client portal, email, or phone. I respond to all inquiries within 48 hours. We'll schedule your initial session at a time that works for both of us.
